ROCK HILL, MO — A TV news report about a carwash scam made Cardinals Car Wash here look like a guilty party, according to Webster-Kirkwood Times online.
The March 2 story stated that the problems first began six months ago when STL Mobile Detailing advertised a $95 detail on several “deal-of-the-day” websites. When people signed up and paid for the deal, they were sent to several different fictitious addresses, including the address of Cardinals Car Wash.
“They used my address numerous times. People were showing up at the carwash — 12 or 15 of them in all — expecting to receive their discounted auto detailing,” Owner Rich Haas said in the story. “I had to tell them I was sorry, but that I never sold anything. I had nothing to do with this.”
The situation got worse when a local TV station ran a story on the unhappy customers of STL Mobile Detailing. Two days of teasers, approximately 18 to 25 spots, showed Cardinals Car Wash with a voice over, “Local St. Louis auto detailer scamming people out of money.”
So far, Haas has had no luck trying to get the channel to run a retraction, but he still wants to clear his name. “It gave the impression that we were the ones scamming people,” Haas said in the story. “I’ve been stopped by people while dropping my kids off at school. People have stopped me at church. They want to know what’s going on.”
