Embracing the digital world

According to my calendar, and the gardening supplies that are popping up in stores, spring is almost here. A great season for us, right? Although, as I write this, it's 23 degrees F outside and snow is gently falling, so it's a little hard to believe that a seasonal change is on its way, but it is, so I will do my best to savor the last few snowfalls and appreciate all that wintertime has to offer.

This month's cover story focuses on the importance of social media and why it's necessary nowadays. I know a lot has changed over the years. The modernity of communication is extraordinary and technology in general is mind-blowing. Children play "outside" via Wii games, people do video conferences through their Smartphones, and you can play games with people all over the world without leaving your couch. It's really remarkable. I was at a party not too long ago and played some beach volleyball, and there was no net, ball or beach in site. It's all come such a long way and sometimes I can't even wrap my mind around it.

Facebook and Twitter are also shaping the way we communicate, especially when it comes to running a business and even more so when it comes to Generation Z. I know we talked about it in the February cover story, "Pondering the year ahead," but I can't stress enough the importance of this generation. Defined as people born in the 1990s who have grown up technologically-suave, they are your next batch of customers and can even be turned into your loyal customers for years and years if treated right right now. Those in the Generation Z bracket are now getting their own vehicles, and they're going to want to get them washed. They're also more than likely on Facebook and Twitter regularly. So, you'll want to impress them, or at least come across as a contemporary business owner in tune with today's way of life. Also, if you have a Facebook or Twitter account, people can "check into" it and show others that they are there, or were there, and lo and behold, your business is being buzzed about without you having to do a thing.

It's a win-win for all involved, and it's also completely free.

And, keep in mind that it's still important to market and reach out to the Baby Boomers and those of the Silent Generation, too. However, I'm also guessing many of them are on Facebook and Twitter as well.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got some Wii snow shoveling to do…
