An IBA maintenance Q&A

David Dougherty, a senior product manager with PDQ Manufacturing, Inc., recently spoke with Professional Carwashing & Detailing and let us in on what works — and what doesn’t — when it comes to making sure your IBA is running in tiptop shape.

Professional Carwashing & Detailing: What are some of the top advantages in having an IBA carwash?

David Dougherty: One of the primary benefits of an IBA is the ability to operate without the high labor expenses typically associated with full service washes.

PC&D: Are they easy to maintain?

Dougherty: IBAs typically have very clear cut preventative maintenance programs which will make maintaining these machines much easier. Most manufacturers have suggested daily, weekly, monthly, annual inspection programs.

PC&D: What are some of the “roadblocks” an owner or operator should be aware of, to keep one from shutting down or malfunctioning?

Dougherty: Staying on top of the preventative maintenance is the best thing an operator can do to minimize downtime.

PC&D: What advice do you have to owners and operators who don’t believe in a proper preventative maintenance program?

Dougherty: Some payoffs are very obvious. There’s greater uptime in the bay which means more cars are getting washed. The life of the equipment is longer. Also, scheduled maintenance is less expensive and more efficient than emergency service calls. The payoffs don’t stop there. One cannot place a price on customer perception. Customers tend to remember and avoid negative experiences like going to wash their car and finding your carwash closed or long waits due to an equipment failure. As a wash owner you are in the appearance business and prevention is a big part of that, if you can’t take care of your facility, then look at what are you encouraging your customers to do?

PC&D: Are there any tips you can share that will help with an IBA’s efficiency?

Dougherty: Many manufactures have made improvements to their offerings that help with the overall efficiencies of their products. These improvements can be as simple as an update kit or as large as a new machine. I suggest contacting your local distributor to discuss options.
