NASCAR Car Wash signs agreement with Sierra Car Wash
The NASCAR Car Wash Company (NCW), exclusive developer of NASCAR themed carwashes, has entered into an agreement with Richard Miller of Sierra Car Wash, a Northern California and Nevada enterprise, to reflag, build and operate carwash locations under the NASCAR Car Wash brand along the I-80 corridor of Northern Nevada and from the southern border of Oregon to mid-state of California over the next five to six years.

The intended market can accommodate 50-60 NASCAR branded carwashes, although it did not specify if Miller or NCW had set a goal number. Earlier this year, the NASCAR Car Wash Company signed an agreement with Dow Jones of Fire House Carwashes in Salt Lake Valley, UT, to build 20-25 express carwash tunnels in that market.

The NASCAR Car Wash Company is an exclusive partner working with NASCAR to create a vast network of NASCAR branded carwashes. The first such locations are expected to open in early 2011.

Miller remarked, “We view NASCARas a great brand from which to develop a strong and high quality car wash experience. Over the last 20 years we have strived to deliver a superior car wash product, in great locations at a terrific value. We are pleased to join with the NASCAR team to further the development of this exceptional car wash brand.”

Daniel Dyer, the Chairman and CEO of NCW, agreed, adding “Richard is a fantastic operator, and we think he’s the perfect fit for what we are doing. Richard knows how to treat his customers, he has a great team in place, and we are excited to roll forward with him. We encourage anyone with a car wash tunnel in the Northern California market to contact Richard to learn how partnering with us by reflagging their existing wash can be a terrific opportunity.”

Veterans honored in droves at U.S. carwashes
Carwashes throughout the United States did their part to honor veterans on Veterans Day on Nov. 11 by giving away free washes. According to early estimates, Grace for Vets said 91,017 washes were given away through the 552 participating companies, which included 1,315 carwash locations.

Bob Ruhe, program manager for Grace for Vets, said in a statement, “Veterans Day has come and gone, and I’m pleased to report that the number of participating companies and the number of participating locations more than doubled from last year.”

Tommy Hoffman, Jr. of the Albany, NY-based carwash chain Hoffman’s Car Wash, said Nov. 11 was a perfect day filled with good weather, dirty cars and veterans lined up around the block. He said over half of their customers for the day were veterans and said the cars were lined up for hours at their Queensbury, NY, location.

In Culpeper, VA, the Culpeper Car Wash gave away over 200 free carwashes to veterans. Owners Tom Boyd and Steve Corbin were more than happy to be a part of the Grace for Vets program.

“The day at the carwash exceeded our very best expectations,” Boyd said in the story. “There was never a time during the entire day that we were not operating at capacity at our facility. They came early and we stayed late. It was extremely rewarding to have both aged vets and a sprinkling of active service personnel clearly express their gratitude for the recognition, when it is us that owe gratitude to them.”

3M will offer auto detailing at Pep Boys stores
3M will be opening car care centers at Pep Boys locations across the country.

The 3M Car Care Center at Pep Boys will feature services like application of 3M™ Window Films and Scotchgard™ Paint Protection Film, automotive detailing, Scotchgard™ Vehicle Protection services, 3M professional headlight restoration, paintless dent removal and more.

Two pilot locations will open in Southern California in late 2010 and early 2011, the release said. “Expansion will be considered for 2011 and beyond, based upon the success of the first locations.”

One of the pilot locations will include a 3M-branded bay for vehicle services. A closed-loop water reclamation system and wash pad will be set up inside the bay for a technician to clean the vehicle. Nearly all of the water used to wash the vehicles is recycled, creating a very “green” method of washing a car. The lack of water waste and impact on sewage systems is important to both companies.

“3M has been in the automotive industry for nearly 100 years, with products for both the DIYer and automotive professional,” said Julie Elepano, 3M Car Care Center Business Manager. “The ‘3M Car Care Center at Pep Boys’ brings our history of innovation and firsts to another level. We’re eager to offer consumers more ways to maintain and improve their cars, and we’re excited to be delivering this concept with Pep Boys as our partner.”

3M has 3M-branded Car Care Centers in multiple locations around the globe, including China, Brazil and India, while Pep Boys has more than 6,000 service bays in over 600 locations in 35 states and Puerto Rico.

Pet washes featured on Modern Marvels
Nearly two years after the History Channel profiled carwashes in an episode of its popular Modern Marvels series, the television program has turned its cameras to the coin-operated pet wash industry.

In an episode that originally aired at 9 p.m. EST, on Friday, Nov. 12, the K9000 Dog Wash, manufactured by TMC Pet Vending, was spotlighted among other coin-operated businesses. Filming of the system took place back in August at the Hoboken Dog Wash in downtown Hoboken, NJ.

In recent years, pet washes have become a popular additional profit center for carwashes.
