Over the course of the carwash trade show season this Fall, Professional Carwashing & Detailing magazine kept hearing about the success of Motor City Wash Works, Inc. So, like any good reporters, we decided to do some investigating and spoke with Jim Utterback, sales and marketing manager, to get the inside scoop.
Professional Carwashing & Detailing: Tell me about your company.
Jim Utterback: Motor City Wash Works, Inc. was established in February of 2004 by industry leading professionals. The company designs and manufactures carwash equipment for the conveyor and roll-over markets. In March of this year, we moved into our new 65,000-sq.-ft. manufacturing facility located in Wixom, Michigan.
PC&D: What do you manufacture?
JU: Motor City Wash Works, Inc. designs and manufactures specific solution application equipment for the professional carwash industry that easily integrates and compliments any carwash facility. We started making application systems for pre-soak, wheel and tire, wax, and triple foam applications.
PC&D: I’ve heard through the grapevine that your company is booming. From what I understand, the business is three-years young. To what do you owe your company’s recent success?
JU: We started with a core group of personnel that had spent most of their life in the carwash industry from direct sales and distribution to engineering and manufacturing. Our entire group has an incredible passion for the carwash industry. It is just amazing how hard you will work when you truly enjoy what you do and the people you work with. Obviously having innovative products that hit a segment of the industry that was generally overlooked by the other equipment manufacturers didn’t hurt either.
PC&D: What are your most popular products?
JU: Our top-three products are our Foaming Wheel and Tire Applicators; Boomerang™ Series Arch; and a product we introduced at the 2007 Car Care World Expo, the Motor City SS™ Tire Gloss Machine.
PC&D: Do you have any new products in the works for 2008?
JU: In May of this year, we started a five product initiative to be completed prior to January 1, 2008. Our first two products (Axis™ High Pressure Arch and Bulldog™ Wheel Brush) on the initiative are completed and the next three will be completed and field tested so that we can introduce them at the 2008 ICA World Car Care Expo in Orlando. All five products are designed for the express tunnel/conveyor market.
PC&D: What are your company plans for 2008? Will you expand the business? Expand the market reach?
JU: We have had incredible growth since we started almost four years ago. Our plan is to maintain a very quick and aggressive growth rate for years to come, without sacrificing our business principles that have helped us get to where we are today. We have distributors throughout North America with a few overseas.
