Mark VII adds distributor, new director, three to sales team
Mark VII Equipment Inc., the US subsidiary of WashTec AG of Germany, has appointed a new director in charge of c-store chain and “big box” accounts, as well as announced a new distributor and three new members to its sales team.

The growing company appointed Rhett Fleming to be Director of Key Account Development. Fleming will be based in Minneapolis, MN, and responsible for developing and executing Mark VII’s strategy for major corporate accounts, including oil companies, convenience store chains and “big box” retailers.

The company also signed a new distributor, Car Wash Technologies, for its Ohio and Western Pennsylvania regions.

Car Wash Technologies has over 10 years’ experience as a carwash distributor and offices in Pittsburgh, Lancaster and Cleveland. The company is managed by CEO Henry Richard III and COO Victor Monteleone, and was recognized on the Inc. 500 list of fastest-growing companies in 2004.

And finally, the company added three people to its sales team: Mike Reilly, Todd Wood and Mike Nusbaum.

Reilly was named Midwest Regional Sales Manager. He will be based in Louisville, KY and head up sales in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas.

Wood joins the company as Northeast Regional Sales Manager, based in Reading, PA and responsible for sales in New England, the tri-state area, Pennsylvania and Ohio.

Nusbaum assumes the role of Business Development Manager. He will be based in Chicago, and in charge of sales in Northern Illinois.

Together the three have over 50 years in combined sales experience, most of it within the carwash industry.

AOL claims IBAs are safer than tunnels
In-bay automatic carwashes are safer, more popular and save drivers time and hassle, according to an article published by

The article didn’t cite research or data that supports its claims, but does point out some ills of driveway carwashing: notably, incomplete rinsing that leads to damaged paint.

The article also told drivers to avoid using friction washes, claiming older carwashes still use “abrasive” brushes instead of cloth brushes.

It advised consumers to watch out for dirty towels being used at full-service carwashes and also tells them to hold off on purchasing extra components that might be part of the “works” wash, saying, “undercarriage rust-proofing…is of dubious value.”

The show jumped 15 spots in this year’s chart. “Car Care World Expo has grown nearly 150 percent in the last 10 years, with attendance now exceeding 9,000 annually,” according to ICA Executive Director Mark Thorsby.

Car Care World Expo 2008 is scheduled for April 8-10th in Orlando, FL.

Carwash goes green
Delta Sonic Car Wash & Detail in Downers Grove, IL, uses biodegradable cleaning products and takes the left-over carwash water to treatment plants before it is released into the environment.

Normally, the water would go into the sewer system and mix into streams and rivers.

Delta Sonic operates carwashes, detail services, quick lubes and convenience stores in NY, PA and IL. The company is the sixth largest conveyorized carwash chain in the nation.

Famous comedian performs carwash song at carwash
Actor and former Saturday Night Live comic Jimmy Fallon performed a song he wrote about a carwash at a local carwash Father’s Day weekend to raise money for charity.

Fallon wrote the song “Car Wash for Peace” to benefit injured soldiers’ families through the charity Fisher House. This is the first time he has performed it at a carwash.

Richard Sasso, owner of Mr. Squeaky Car Wash, e-mailed Fallon through his page, suggesting he do a benefit appearance at his carwash location.

About 100 people showed up for the performance. Fallon took pictures and chatted with fans as carwash employees took donations from customers for Fisher House.

A sample of the lyrics: “This is a carwash for peace, there’s trouble in the Middle East/There’ll be no more wars, or dirty cars. Carwash for peace.”

Sasso aims to organize a nation-wide Carwash for Peace day, anticipated to be held on August 11. Carwash operators looking to get involved should contact Sasso at: 786-247-7974.
