Unitec Electronics in Elkridge, MD, has named Gerry Grossman as director of sales and marketing, leading the company’s efforts to further drive growth.

Grossman’s responsibilities include the development of programs, products and services to meet the needs of Unitec’s customers.

Grossman brings 17 years of carwash industry experience to his role as the new director of sales and marketing.

R. L. “Bud” Abraham, president of DETAIL PLUS Car Appearance Systems, is the recipient of this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award from Mobile Tech News and Detailer’s Digest.

Kevin Halewood, organizer of the expo and publisher of Mobile Tech News and Detailer’s Digest, said Abraham has contributed more to the advancement of the detail industry than anyone he knows.

“What an honor, to be recognized by your peers for contributions to your industry,” Abraham said.

Supplier adds nine distributors across U.S., Canada
D & S Car Wash Equipment Company has recently added distributors in the West, Midwest and Northeast regions of the U.S., as well as expanded sales efforts in Canada.

New distributors in the West include Bennett, Inc. of Bend, OR and Wilson Distributing in Seattle, WA who will provide coverage in the Pacific Northwest along with Powell-Christensen of Richland, WA.

Intermountain Wash Systems and Rocky Mountain Automotive will handle Utah, Nevada and Idaho.

ChemStation of Stockton, CA was also recently appointed for central California, including San Jose and San Francisco.

In the Midwest, D & S has added Mid America Carwash in Rush City, MN to cover Minnesota and AACE Carwash of Imperial, NE to handle the state of Nebraska.

In the Northeast, Carwash Solutions of Concord, MA was added for New England and in Canada; Carwash Wizard of Toronto will focus on the Ontario Province.

Carwash supplier develops new line of car care products
David J. Mazzarella, President and CEO of Mazzarella Car Care Systems, LLC, (MCCS) has announced a new product line called Hot Body Wax™.

The new product line offers professional grade UV protection and removes light oxidation, paint impurities to give vehicles a showroom shine.

MCCS is a privately held company involved in marketing automobile appearance products to the car care industry and automotive enthusiasts.

A carwash in Eugene, OR hosted a fundraiser for a member of the Young Marines, and its biggest supporters might surprise you — other carwash owners.

Many carwash owners and operators purchased tickets to the carwash event, despite the fact they are located hundreds of miles from the wash.

As a Kentucky carwash owner wrote on the boy’s auction page, “You’re selling carwashes to carwash owners. You could probably sell air conditioners to Eskimos.”

The Young Marines is a youth education and service program for boys and girls, ages 8 through completion of high school, focusing on character building, leadership and a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.

Think multi-profit
Douglas and Ed Miller’s proposal for a carwash includes a deli inside the building. Hands On Premium Car Wash, the combination deli and carwash, would be built in St. John, IN.

The carwash and detail shop would feature a uniformed team of eight employees cleaning and detailing cars while customers wait inside and order food ranging from sandwiches, pasta and salads at the deli.

If the town approves the necessary requirements for the business, the groundbreaking could be this month.

Hire locals
Motor City Car Wash’s strategy might surprise you. The wash recently opened in an area of West Palm Beach, FL that has the highest unemployment rate in the county.

But the devil is in the details. The full-serve carwash promised during its application process to employ workers who live in the community in exchange for receiving city and county economic grants — a total of $150,000.

Over 60 percent of Motor City Car Wash’s workforce lives in the neighborhood, and the grants have helped to defray the $1.2 million project’s cost for partners Cedric Yapp, Richard Bowman, David Daszkal, Jim Knight and Jeff Snow.

The area is frequently the subject of negative news because of incidences of crime, but Yapp said the wash hasn’t had a problem in the six months they have been working there.

The street has recently had a lot of new business come in — including a new self-serve carwash just down the street.

CEO forum at SCWA convention a success
Exhibitors and attendees of the Southwest Car Wash Association’s (SCWA) 2007 convention and expo were more than pleased with this year’s show, saying it was the best in 25 years.

The convention started on a high note with a “CEO forum.”

Charlie Lieb, CEO of PDQ, Rafael Tomas, CEO of Istobal, and Murray Kennedy, CEO of Mark VII, presented a discussion on the factors influencing the carwash industry today and where the industry will be going in the next five years.

Ron Ingram, owner of Four Seasons Car Wash in Abilene, TX was installed as the 2007-2008 SCWA President.

AOCA prepares for annual convention
The Automotive Oil Change Association’s (AOCA) celebrates its 20th anniversary at this year’s convention held April 28 - May 1 in Dallas, TX.

A wide range of seminars presented by renowned business and industry experts will offer a chance for everyone to learn how to take their business to the next level.

At the Fast Lube Expo, the world’s largest event dedicated to buyers and suppliers to the fast lube industry, attendees will meet top industry suppliers from around the country to learn about products and services that could help them improve their operations.

CCA celebrates 18th Annual Mini Expo
The Connecticut Carwash Association celebrated it’s 18th Annual Mini Expo in Cromwell, CT.

Carwashers networked with over 40 plus vendors and mingled with more than 150 attendees.

Hors d’oeuvers, a buffet dinner and raffle prizes including a big screen TV, were offered as well.

Maryland considers service tax
Tax Bill HB 228, introduced in Maryland, would tax carwash services, and the Mid-Atlantic Carwash Association is not happy.

The bill’s purpose is to alter the definition of taxable service under the sales and tax to impose or exempt the tax on certain services by a political subdivision of the State.

Under the new bill, taxable services include motor vehicle maintenance or repair service including motor vehicle washing and waxing services.
