Bob Schrum, owner and founder of Flagstop Carwash and Quick Lube, was a keynote speaker at the Chesterfield County Chamber of Commerce 2010 Breakfast with the Pros event in January. The two-hour breakfast, designed to give business owners an arsenal of survival tools, is part of a series of seminars offered by the Chamber of Commerce to help, inspire and educate business owners.
Schrum has been in the carwash business since 1981. He started out with one location and now has six which serve hundreds and thousands of customers per year.

Turtle Wax is moving into India now that the auto market there has started growing at a rapid pace.
David J. Lord, international business development director of Turtle Wax Europe, said, "We see the culture of taking care of cars is slowly catching up. We hope to grow with the market and may establish a manufacturing facility in the near future."The company’s goal is to grow sales 100 percent in the country over the next decade.
InterClean Equipment, a manufacturer of specialty heavy-duty wash systems, celebrated its 25th anniversary in December.
InterClean started in November 1984 as a three-employee company in a leased two-room office. Today InterClean’s office in Ypsilanti, MI, is a complex occupying two buildings and has 52 employees locally and 15 full time sales engineers spread throughout the United States and Canada.
The company has grown original revenues from $250,000 to over $13 million today and continues to grow in spite of the general economic downturn.
Earlier in that same month, InterClean was also recognized and received an award for being one of the fastest growing companies in South East Michigan, the release said.
Waterway Carwash again teamed up with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) for the company’s annual “Tie One On For Safety” Event, held every New Year’s Eve to remind people of safe driving while ringing in the New Year. Waterway is among the largest conveyor carwash chains in the nation.
MADD volunteers in Gateway, MO, tied symbolic red ribbons on cars at the Creve Coeur, MO, Waterway location from noon to 2 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. The site also collected donations on behalf of MADD the week of December 26 through December 31.
Best of Show Automotive, a classic car restoration and detailing business based in Mentor, OH, has hired San Diego-based j. simms agency to create an integrated marketing program.
Best of Show provides an array of services for personal classic, muscle or sports cars, as well as restores and sells muscle and high-performance cars from its world-class 60,000-square-foot showroom, called the Mentor Museum of Speed.
According to the company, j. simms will assist in securing sponsorship, group sales and corporate event revenue for both Best of Show Automotive and its Mentor Museum of Speed.
Hamilton Manufacturing, supplier of carwash systems and supplies, has made several changes to their sales territory coverage.

Carolina Pride Carwash, Inc. celebrated its 20th year operating under the name Carolina Pride in December.
The company previously operated under the name Reynolds Equipment Company. The company has been in operation under the two names by the Reynolds family for a total of 42 years.
As part of the 20th year celebration Carolina Pride sponsored CP Sweepstakes for customers of its clients’ carwashes in North and South Carolina. The Grand Prize, a 2010 Ford Fusion, went to customer JoAnne Bowen, who frequented Lindy’s Carwash in Anderson, SC.
Jerry Lindeman, owner of Lindy’s Carwash, was also on hand for the Grand Prize giveaway.
The New England Carwash Association (NECA) offered a Ritz-Carlton Leadership Center program at its Winter Meeting in January. “Radar On – Antenna Up … Fulfilling Customers’ Unexpressed Wishes,” presented at the Hilton Hotel in Dedham, MA, was designed to help operators improve customer service and relations at their carwash locations.
A recent market research study conducted by the Association showed customer service played a major role in the consumer’s carwash decision. The study is available for free to NECA members.
