Dutch researchers at the Eindhoven University of Technology have developed a coating surface for cars that will never have to be cleaned, a VR-ZONE story reported.

The July 23 story said, "Potential real-life applications for this new material include never having to wash your car again, or never having to wipe fingerprints off your phone’s touchscreen."

The research was led by Catarina Esteves who works in the department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry at the university.

One potential problem for the coating, though, is that it's "easily and irreversibly damaged by light contact."

The story said Esteves and her team are working to refine the technology further and put it into production before 2021.

If you look at the story that this article was derived from, it is very difficult to know what is going on with this "breakthrough". Whoever the author is who wrote this excerpt for the Car Wash article didn't really do a good job explaining, and in fact pointed out that the "easily and irreversibly damaged by light contact", but that is for the older technology...the newer technology does a better job, but it too can be disrupted. The original article, which you can link to, is confusing as well, and there is no connection made between keeping dirt off a car and how this new material can accomplish that. The article is really confusing, and seems to be more about making current surfaces thicker, and self repairing, than it is about keeping dirt off a car.
