SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Representative Eric Hutchings accused a carwash of ripping him off for $50, so he’s moving to outlaw what happened, The Salt Lake Tribune reported.

The Jan. 9 story stated that Hutchings recently used a self-serve carwash where he swiped his credit card. When he finished with the wand, he figured the credit card reader would turn off automatically. It didn’t.

Lawmakers make public pay for detailing

When his credit card bill arrived, he found a charge for nearly $50. He tried unsuccessfully to contact the carwash’s owner and protest the bill with his credit card company.

"My guess, if it happened to me, it has happened to thousands of people,” Hutchings said in the article. “It’s just a sneaky-bugger way of getting people on a technicality.”

Proposed bill would require carwash licensing

Hutchings is writing a bill that would require carwashes to automatically turn off credit card readers when wands or other equipment are switched off. Or, an owner may set a reasonable maximum for credit card readers instead.

If the idiot had shut off the wash it would conserve water and not have charged him. Do you leave the faucet running when you are at home?

I have owned a self serve car wash for 10 years and I have only once had someone not push stop and drive away. In that case, the maximum time kicks in and they are only charged a maximum of $30 which is what the limit is set at. Doesn't take much to read Senator! Can we make a law to make people read the signage??

I am embarrassed for Representative Hutchings, admiting that he isn't sharp enough to read the clearly marked card acceptor that states he needs to push "stop" when fininshed washing his car. The credit card company, he freely admits (more embarrassed for him am I ), asked him if there were instructions. He was forced to say "yes" and the card company of course refused help. Furthermore, it is ludicrous to place such import on the (his)"issue" that he is actually going to submit a bill outlawing what he sees as a rip off. Surely he has more important things to do!

First of all, it sounds like it was clearly stated to push the stop button when done washing. So if he failed to read the instruction that’s his fault. I have owned a car wash for 5 years now, and we also accept credit cards in our self wash bays. We do have instruction that clearly say push the stop when done washing. Our drive off limit is set to $15.00 dollars. I will say that a drive off limit of $50 is too high. Who's going to use $50 to wash their vehicle? But if this car wash owner wants to set it at $50 so be it. So Mr. Utah Representative, the next time you are in a situation where you're not sure how things work maybe you should look around for some instruction. Personally if that was my car wash I would have made it right with you. But what you shouldn't do is jump to conclusion that all car washes are equal, and if there were instruction to push the stop button, you surely should not call it a 'rip-Off' Take your lumps, and blame yourself. I'm sure there is better ways you could be serving the people of Utah.
