WEST HAVEN, CT — Splash Car Wash here announced that customers are now entitled to free self-serve vacuums, according to WAFB.

The Jan. 14 story stated that this Splash location has offered full-service carwashes, express washes, Five Star Detailing and oil changes. After a $250,000 investment, the wash now has state-of-the-art vacuums available at no charge for customers.

The death of free vacuums?

Currently, the wash has a five minute carwash for $5. Mark Curtis, company CEO, said in the article, "We are happy to provide our customers such a great service at a competitive price. In these challenging times, we look to provide added value for the customers that have supported over the past few years.”

The car wash industry has been completely decimated by poor and I do mean poor business decisions. The installation and offering of free vacuums is indeed a very poor management decision. Anything with a cost needs a revenue source. The thought process of free vacuums increasing exterior washes is completely unthinkable. Why don't you just give it all for free and charge for the atmosphere. now you will get people vacuuming their cars without a wash and offering your employees jobs elsewhere. The reason our industry margins are so low is due to this kind of car wash offerings.

To survive and prosper in business, you need to offer a viable product or service to customers at a reasonable price. Giving free vacuums as a short promotion is fine, but as a business model you undermine your income and diminish the value of the service over time. In our five self serves we charge $1.50 for a four minute cycle and it is a significent part of our invome. We have updated our vacs to 3 motor with a retro fit kit, and they are the most powerful in our area. People don't mind spending an extra quarter or two if the service is exceptional.

I agree the only washes that will be left will be the big boys and not the average operator.Similiar to pyramid scheme. The first guys make it and now others try but fail.
