A basketball player for Michigan State University, Magic was drafted in the 1st round (1st pick, 1st overall ) by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1979 Draft.
Earvin “Magic” Johnson got his nickname at the age of 15 when he was a sophomore in high school. Lansing State Journal sportswriter Fred Stably, Jr., gave him the name after witnessing him score 36 points, 16 rebounds and 16 assists in a single game.
Magic didn’t necessarily want to be a professional basketball player. He instead focused his studies on being a communication studies major while at school in the hopes of being a television commentator.
After playing 13 seasons in the NBA, Magic compiled 17,707 points (19.5 ppg), 6,559 rebounds (7.2 rpg) and 10,141 assists (11.2 apg). He also made 1,724 steals.
Magic serves as chairman and CEO of Magic Johnson Enterprises, which was founded in 1987. Magic’s portfolio includes AMC Magic Johnson movie theatres, Starbucks, Burger King, 24 Hour Fitness Magic Sport centers, Best Buy, Cadbury Schweppes, Fatburger, and T.G.I. Fridays .
