PC&D is preparing the Top 50 list

If your wash should be on the 2014 Top 50 list, contact Editor Debra Gorgos at and include the:

  • The name of the carwash chain;
  • Website address;
  • The number of locations; and
  • The location of the carwash headquarters, or where the first location was opened.

The list is based on the number of conveyor locations. If a new location is not open yet, but will be before October 1, it can be included in the total. The list will be featured in the October issue of Professional Carwashing & Detailing. The deadline for your submission is July 31.

Industry suffers two great losses

Andrew Balash, an innovator and respected voice in the carwash industry, has passed away. He was 47 years old. He was the father of two children, Sara and Matthew, and husband to Donna Farmer. He died close to his home in Michigan on May 10.

Tom Hoffman Jr., CEO of Hoffman Car Wash, said: “Andy's designs and innovations were widely known, respected and appreciated. He really cared for his customers and was widely regarded as a great guy.  We extensively used his products and loved working with Andy. He will be missed.”

Also, Dr. Joseph Enning, the founder of the German Mr. Wash chain, who was given the “Brian Campbell Innovation Award” by the International Carwash Association (ICA) in 2010, passed away on May 8.

Enning’s son, Richard, sent out a message to those within the carwash industry about his father’s passing which stated:

“On behalf of our whole family I have to inform you that my father passed away last night at the age of 85. After a long fight against prostate cancer he finally slept away in peace. He was the center of our business and family life. We will miss him desperately.”

MacNeil introduces virtual tunnel

ONTARIO, Canada — MacNeil has developed the MacNeil Carwash Configurator, an exclusive software-based virtual simulator tool that allows wash owners to see a digital layout of what a prospective wash would look like, according to a press release.

The configurator, the release notes, "enables clients to build and customize both three-dimensional perspective and plan-view layouts of a carwash tunnel and expand and contract the tunnel based on planned space availability.”

According to Steven L’Heureux, Ryko Solutions CEO, "The carwash investors of today are more sophisticated than ever. They are expecting the most advanced and easy-to-use tools so that they can simply, quickly and accurately work with our distributors to move through the process of building their facility.”

Mister acquires six Octopus locations

TUCSON, Ariz. — Mister Car Wash has acquired six Octopus Car Wash locations in Albuquerque, N.M.

Mister is the largest carwash chain in the U.S., and along with operating 134 carwashes, also has 32 lube shops. The locations range across 14 states.

The CEO of Octopus Joel Jurkens said about the acquisitions, “Coming to the decision to sell was not an easy one. However, we are confident that Mister Car Wash will respect the legacy my father and family has built among our long-standing employees and within the industry.” 

Groupon’s Deal Builder targets new clients

CHICAGO — When Groupon launched its new Deal Builder program in February, they had businesses like carwashes in mind, said Amit Koren, senior director local product management. The idea behind the program is simple: To allow local and small businesses the chance to build their own Groupon deals to reach their target audience.

What makes Deal Builder different, Koren said, is that it’s open to all merchants in the U.S., instead of mainly focused in major markets.
