CHESIRE, CT — The planning and zoning commission here gave unanimous approval for Stop & Shop to tear down an existing carwash, the New Haven Register reported.

The Feb. 29 story stated that a new gas station will be built on the property that is located in the middle of the city’s business district.

“They’re taking an underperforming facility and redeveloping with something that is new and will look more attractive along with some of the improvements we’re making,” Town Planner William Voelker said in the story. “They’re also getting rid of some of the paved surface at the rear of the existing property, which we view as a positive.”

Boemmels’ Car Wash will be demolished in September, and the construction of the new gas station will begin soon after.

The new station should be completed by the end of 2012, and it will have 10 fueling stations spread across five concrete islands.
