VERO BEACH, FL — Washing a car in the driveway was described as “one of the most environmentally unfriendly chores” by a writer here, tcpalm.com reported.
The June 20 story said runoff from driveway carwashing goes right into storm drains that empty into lakes and wetlands. This runoff will poison aquatic life.
Federal law requires U.S. commercial carwash facilities to drain their waste water into sanitary sewers, so it is treated before discharge, the story said. In addition, washes use computer systems and high-pressure nozzles to minimize water usage.
For fund raising, some carwash facilities allow tickets to be sold that are redeemable at local carwashes. This allows organizations to still make money while keeping local waterways clean, according to the story.
