Carwashes, media and vendors aid WashUSA

The Professional Car Care B2B Trade Group™, publishers of Professional Carwashing & Detailing® magazine and Professional Car Care Online™ are proud to announce their 2005 sponsorship of WashUSA, the one-day fund-raiser, slated for September 24, to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America.

"Helping The Make-A-Wish Foundation® by itself is an extremely worthwhile goal, but the event also aids in educating the public about the benefits of professional carwashing. In addition to significant vendor and media support, WashUSA's committee has reported that several well-known carwash chains have joined the fund-raising efforts including: Autobell, Delta Sonic, Mr. Carwash, Scrub-A-Dub, Joan's, Splash, Terrible Herbst, Waterway, Golden Nozzle and Carnett's, just to name just a few.

Superior Car Wash Systems changes leadership

Representatives from car-care supplier Superior Car Wash Systems, Inc. have confirmed that Mike Hudson has stepped down from his position as president of the Phoenix-based carwash maker.

Hudson began his retirement in August, and after 20 years with Superior, chose to retire and spend more time on his personal carwash businesses in Mesa, AZ.

The company continues business under the leadership of Archie Johnson, owner of Superior Car Wash Systems, who will now act as president. The company has been a manufacturer of carwash equipment since 1971.

Big-box carwash approved in Georgia

Georgia's Chatham County Metropolitan Planning Commission recently approved a plan to allow a Sam's Club to build a new site which will house a carwash and gas station despite protests from many local residents who claim the big-box retailer is "inappropriate" for the neighborhood.

The Sam's Club will be located right next to sister store Super Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart's next step is getting permits for the store and after that, it will reportedly only take eight months to build.

OSHA reveals targeted inspection plan

Car-care business owners should be aware that the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) has announced that its 2005 site-specific targeting (SST) plan will focus on approximately 4,400 high-hazard worksites.

The plan is part of the agency's unannounced comprehensive inspections for workplaces throughout the year. Over the past seven years, OSHA has conducted a SST inspection program based on injury and illness data from previous years.

"Our targeted inspection program maximizes the effectiveness of our inspection resources to those workplaces with the highest safety and health hazards," Jonathan L. Snare, acting OSHA chief, stated in a press bulletin. "This program gives us the opportunity to focus our enforcement efforts where it will have the most benefit for workers and employers."

This year's program will initially cover about 4,400 individual worksites on the primary list that reported 12 or more injuries or illnesses resulting in days away from work, restricted work activity, or job transfer for every 100 full-time workers.

Report shows increase for Mace carwash sales

Mace Security International, Inc., manufacturer of security and personal defense products, and the owner of a number of car and truck wash facilities, announced an increase in its carwash profits and an overall profit of $.03-per-share for the second quarter, according to the company's quarterly financial report.

For the quarter, which ended June 30, 2005, the security segment represented approximately 39 percent of Mace's sales, which is a substantial increase from approximately 16 percent for the second quarter of last year.

Revenues from the company's car and truck wash segment increased by approximately $610,000, or 2.9 percent, in the first half of 2005 compared to the same period in 2004.

According to the company, the increase is primarily the result of an improvement in weather resulting in a 4.2 percent increase in carwash volume, partially offset by the divesture of two carwash facilities during the first half of 2004.

Despite profits, Mace continues to explore the sale of its car and truck washes with the goal of using the proceeds to fund further expansion of its security segment.

Wash equipment cleans national landmark

Kärcher, a supplier of cleaning equipment to the carwash industry, was selected to carry out the first ever cleaning of the presidents' faces at the Mount Rushmore National Memorial in South Dakota.

Technicians with the company used harnessed ropes anchored on the monument to wash the sculptured faces. The restorative cleaning work was conducted in co-operation with the National Park Service.

Germany-based Alfred Kärcher GmbH & Co.'s equipment and technicians used water through pressure-washing guns and nozzles to clean the granite surfaces.

The company reported that it began testing its equipment on parts of the surface material in April to deem the process effective and safe for the memorial.

Workers cleaned decades of dirt and invasive lichens that were caked on the stone images of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt, carved between 1927 and 1941.

Truck wash supplier installs European system

InterClean Equipment, a Michigan-based specialty vehicle wash equipment manufacturer, has just completed installing the first retail truck wash system in Europe.

In February 2005 InterClean signed contracts with its European agency, Truck Wash Europe, to design, build and supply 38 retail truck wash systems.

Currently, the company is on track to complete shipping the first ten systems by the end of 2005.

InterClean also has a new series of biological water recycling and wastewater treatment systems presently under development, which are expected to be introduced in early 2006.

Detailing polisher celebrates golden anniversary

The Cyclo polisher for detailers celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, and has sported virtually the same design and function throughout half a century.

The tool's origins come from the early 1950s when Marvin Warner and Jim Helbig, who worked for a Colorado-based aircraft operation, were restoring a twin engine war plane and decided to create a mechanical polisher that mimicked the motion of a human hand.

In celebration of the tool's 50 years on the market, Cyclo Toolmakers Inc. developed a gold-plated anniversary edition in honor of co-creator Warner who still lives in Colorado and retired just last year at the age of 80.
