Jiffy Lube International named two new integral senior management members to its team.

Rick Altizer joined the company as General Manager of Global Operations. He previously held a position with Midas International.

Craig Linington, who previously held a position with McDonald’s Corporation, was named Customer Experience Manager.

Linington’s role is a newly created one for Jiffy Lube. He will develop “the strategic framework, standards and processes to optimize and sustain the desired customer experience across all Jiffy Lube service centers.”

Jiffy Lube has more than 2,200 service centers in North America.

Arthur Eisner, former owner and president of Duren Sales, Inc., a distributor for Hanna carwash equipment, passed away on Aug. 29 after a lengthy illness. He was 86.

Before starting Duren Sales, Eisner was a navigator in the Air Force during World War II. He was also a member of the OSS (the precursor to the CIA) where he flew B-24s, dropping supplies behind enemy lines.

Eisner is survived by his wife, Mitzie, daughters Ruth, Laura and Amy, stepdaughters Karen and Leslie, several grandchildren, and his sister, Elaine.

Tim Kimsey, CEO and president of Kim Supply, Inc., passed away on Aug. 22 after battling cancer.

Kimsey was a pioneer of the carwash industry. In 1965, he built one of the first self-serve carwashes anywhere in the country and shortly thereafter began marketing parts and equipment to the carwash industry.

In 1977, Kimsey and his wife, Linda, bought Kim Supply Inc., a company his father had founded to supply equipment and parts to the agricultural industry. Kimsey had joined the company in 1965 and quickly realized the potential of the then fledgling carwash market.

Kimsey was actively involved on many advisory boards, trade associations and educations programs for the carwash industry. He also made many diverse inventions, including the Blend-n-Save soap blending system for self-serve carwashes introduced last year.

He leaves behind his wife and Kim treasurer, Linda Kimsey.

In Other News

Cloister Car Wash, a chain of four locations in Pennsylvania, is taking its annual Veterans Day program national.

The program, called Grace for Vets, honors veterans and offers them a free carwash on Veterans Day Sunday, Nov. 11.

Cloister is asking carwash operators across the USA to participate in Grace for Vets and is offering a packet with all of the necessary literature and information to make the Veterans Day program a success.

Brown Bear Car Wash, the 16th largest conveyor carwash chain in America, celebrated its 50th anniversary this August. The chain thanked customers for 50 years of patronage with free carwashes at its tunnel carwash locations.

Brown Bear, which opened its first site in Seattle in August 1957, now owns and operates a total of 38 carwashes in Washington State, 19 of which are conveyor locations.

EMEC, a designer and manufacturer of metering pumps, controllers, sensors and accessories commonly used in the carwash industry, celebrated it’s 25th anniversary in a gala event that included 350 employees, families, and representatives from around the globe.

EMEC was launched in a garage in 1982 and today produces over 63 pumps, 42 controllers, and 10 communication modem/router variations.

EMEC manufactures a complete line of electronic controllers capable of adjusting chemical injection.

EMEC has facilities in Rieti and Milan, Italy; Boston, MA; Houston, TX; and retains distributors in 36 countries.

Car-Freshner Corporation, a maker of air freshener products for the carwash industry, won the 2007 Supplier Performance Award by Retail Category (SPARC) Silver Circle Award. The award is based on a poll conducted by Retailing Today of key merchandising executives among the top 150 companies in the $1.5 trillion retailing industry.

Among the selection criteria are: new product innovations, gearing product mix to maximize turn and profit, on-time delivery, advertising support, and quality control.

Auto Care Forum,, a website community for carwash owner/operators, has been redesigned. Some of the new features are user profiles with pictures, private e-mail, pictures to online posts, and a soon-to-be-added gallery area where operators can post pictures of their wash, cars, family or vacation.

Association Round-up

In the Northeast
Some 60 carwashes teamed up on Aug. 18 to turn washes into wishes as part of the first WashCT fundraising event for the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Connecticut. The one-day fundraiser was spearheaded by the Connecticut Carwash Association.

The event was patterned after the successful, but cancelled, annual WashUSA day held from 2001 to 2006, which raised over $800,000 before being cancelled in December of 2006.

Participating washes across the state were able to garner additional volume and press coverage on event day, in addition to helping out some deserving kids. The event had participation and media coverage from radio, television and print mediums all over Connecticut.

The 2008 event is slated for Saturday, August 16 with a rain date of August 23.

Across the nation
The National Association of Professional Detailing and Restoration will host several detail seminars at next year’s Mobile Tech Expo, held Jan. 17-19 in Clearwater, FL.

David Ghoudoussi, a chemist for Optimum Car Care, will lead educational sessions on swirl removal, color sanding techniques, proper wheel cleaning, leather cleaning, and stain removal.

There will be over $2,000 worth of give-a-ways during the detail seminars.

Other highlights:
  • Joy Gendusa, founder and CEO of Postcard Mania will be keynote speaker and offer ideas on marketing;
  • A detail pavilion will feature 11 new vendors
  • A detailers roundtable; and
  • NAPDR membership meeting & dinner.
The Automotive Oil Change Association has released its 2007 Cost of Doing Business Report, containing valuable information about the fast lube industry.

The report is broken down by region, by high profit firms and by sales volume.

The report contains data on profitability; sales; inventory, asset and personnel productivity; financial and receivables management; balance sheets; income statements, operating and non-operating expenses; compensation benefits; insurance expenses; number of employees, and much more.
