Volume is down, but profit is up, meaning a rather uneven year for in-bay automatic carwashes.

Slow growth is the likely result of bad weather and rising gas prices, and will hopefully improve in time for next year’s survey.
Pricing remains stagnant (going up only a few cents for a top-package carwash), and profits/revenue are only slightly above what operators experienced in 2005.

Interestingly enough, expenses remain relatively stable. The dramatic increases appear to be with water and insurance, while electric/gas/fuel costs are down. This may point towards savvy operators catching on with reclaim systems and VFD technology.

It seems the small changes are the ones worth noting here. Recycling and reclaiming systems are on the rise, as well as credit card use. Computerized cash management/POS systems are also becoming more popular; over half of all operators are using this technology.

The 2007 In-Bay Automatic Carwash Benchmark Survey is made possible by the owners/operators of the carwashes who took the time to answer the online survey which was e-mailed to them. The staff of Professional Carwashing & Detailing thanks those persons for their efforts, as the survey would not be possible without them.
