18 ways to say you're green

1 Update your logo. Consider adding an emblem of the green movement to your carwash’s logo: Planets, green leaves and the recycle symbol can communicate to your customers without a lengthy explanation.

2 Get new uniforms. Your carwash staff probably looks sharp in the red polo shirts you ordered a few years ago; but wouldn’t a green color be a simple way to remind your customers that your carwash is all about the environment?

3 Put it on your menu. It can be a simple phrase up at the top, or something you repeat throughout the menu choices. Adding “Welcome to Smith’s Car Wash: Home of the eco-friendly wash,” or “we use biodegradable soaps,” is an easy way to let your customers know about your green business practices.

4 Say it! Ask your cashiers, greeters, or maintenance personnel (at a self-serve business) to mention one green fact about your carwash whenever they encounter a customer.

5 Add it to your name. Smith’s Car Wash can easily become Smith’s Green Car Wash; a visible reminder to your customers every time they pass your sign.

6 Announce it on local television. Contact your local news crew to see if they’re looking for any environmental stories in the community. Perhaps their viewers would be interested in learning how washing at home can harm the environment, or how VFDs and water reclaim are helping your business stay on the cutting edge of eco-friendly technology.

7 Get it in writing. By the same token, perhaps the local newspaper is also looking for a scoop! Write to the managing editor to see if they want a demonstration. If not, consider writing a letter to the editor to get your business’s name and news in print.

8 Head back to school. Teachers are always looking for interactive lessons, and there’s no better time to reach your customers then when they’re young. See if the elementary school could use a trip to a local business to learn about water recycling, or if an older group of students might be interested in conducting a science experiment to see how much water is wasted in an at-home carwash.

9 Make sure it’s on your business cards. Create a slogan that communicates your commitment to the environment and add it to your business cards. “We recycle water,” or “We use biodegradable soaps,” are easy and matter-of-fact, while “The greenest carwash around,” can leave more room for interpretation.

10 Create a coupon. Advertise special ‘green’ days where your eco-friendly packages (perhaps all of them) are half-off. Rainy day specials can also be rephrased as a way to help avoid oily runoff into your community’s storm drains.

11 Try a marketing gimmick. Something simple like washing green cars for free to relay your new energy-efficient vacuums or dryer can be a fun promotion for your customers and a great way to educate them in the process.

12 Hold a grand re-opening. If you’ve recently updated to new equipment that saves water or energy, hold a grand re-opening to celebrate your eco-friendliness and let customers in on your happy news.

13 Host a recycling drive. Ask the local Boy or Girl Scout troops if they’d like to partner up for a recycling drive and solicit bottle donations. When customers arrive, remind them about your commitment to the environment in your business practices, too.

14 Put together a pamphlet. Create an educational pamphlet about your wash and hand it out to all new customers who provide their e-mail address to your staff, along with a few coupons for free washes and a business card.

15 Announce a contest for green ideas. Ask your customers what they do to stay green at home and use some of the tips in your pamphlet. Give the customer with the best idea a few free wash coupons.

16 Have a giveaway. Hand out seeds, recyclable water bottles or pens made out of recycled materials on any given day to let customers know you’re serious about being eco-friendly.

17 Splash it on the walls. Hang up posters in the self-serve bays or use marketing stickers on your arches to communicate your green business practices to customers while they’re washing.

18 Offer free organic food or coffee on Sundays. Plain and simple: Folks love free stuff and nothing’s better than when it helps the environment, too.
