2006 Lube Benchmarking Report

Professional Carwashing & Detailing’s® 2006 Lube Benchmarking Report represents a cooperative venture with the Automotive Oil Change Association, which co-sponsored the survey and provided a list of its members to expand the base of operators to be polled.

As a result, the number of respondents to this survey increased. Because a new base of operators is involved, overall comparisons between 2005 and 2006 numbers are not statistically valid.

Some numbers do correspond. The typical fast lube location has three bays, and has for more than a decade. A majority of shops still have at least a couple of competitors, usually within a mile of their facility.

The average price for a standard oil change went up by just over $2 from 2005 to 2006 and better than eight in 10 customers purchased additional services.

The survey found nearly 90 percent of the respondents track mileage between customer oil changes – an average of 4,400 miles – but less than 10 percent of the facilities use e-mail to remind customers of time for an oil change. Most shops rely on a postcard or letter, or on the customer looking at a windshield sticker.

Again, PC&D thanks the AOCA for the association’s assistance with this year’s survey. With a higher response rate, the survey can more accurately gauge the industry’s health.

The 2006 Lube Benchmarking Report compiles data that falls within a 95 percent confidence interval, which essentially discards the top 2.5 percent and the bottom 2.5 percent of responses to eliminate the disproportionate influence of statistical outliers on the final data.
