C-store plans raise competition questions
APPLETON, WI — A proposed Kwik Trip c-store and carwash location here led a committee to question if adjacent gas operations would be a good thing for the city, Post-Crescent Media reported.
The April 6 story stated that the new multi-profit business would be immediately adjacent to an existing Apple Creek Convenience Center. The discussion about the new business was part of a zoning decision, which is governed by specific guidelines.
Karen Harkness, director of community and economic development, pointed out in the story that any discussion outside of whether the station fits the city codes would be out of bounds. "The decision is purely about whether the gas station fits within the city's zoning description for that area," she said in the story.
The city's mayor pointed out that it is not unusual to have gas stations in close proxmity, and it does not put the businesses "in peril over the other."
The final decision will be back in from of the city's planning commission next week.
