Man robs carwash ATM with blowtorch

July 17, 2013

KENSINGTON, PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND, CANADA — A thief rode up to a carwash ATM on an ATV and used a blowtorch to open the machine and take the money.

Wet ‘N’ Wild Car Wash Owner Brad Ramsay was alerted by police that they had been called to his wash after a neighbor called in the bizarre scene.

“They told me somebody was behind my car wash, breaking into the cash box,” Ramsay in The Guardian story. “Sure enough, they did.”

Area carwashes hit by string of burglaries

Police say the thief got away with between $700 and $1,000, though they recovered $132 in a subsequent search of the woods behind the carwash while trying to track down the suspect.

Ramsay said the crime took 21 minutes, according to his security camera footage.

The ATM was damaged and is estimated to cost $24,000 to replace.
