Watchdog website picks up 'carwashero' stories
Watchdog website TruthOut.org has published an in-depth look at the labor battle in the carwash industry.
The piece, penned by Amy Dean, focuses on the recent contracts won across the country by the carwasheros.
“Recent victories have resulted in some of the first-ever carwash collective bargaining contracts,” Dean writes. “In Queens, New York, workers organized with the backing of an unusual community-labor alliance – a joint effort by Make the Road New York and the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store (RWDSU) union.”
The article tells a story about some employees who were forced to pay the manager $12 a day for the “privilege” of working there.
