Cape Town looks to end 'informal' carwashes

September 4, 2013
CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA — City officials are clamping down on “informal” carwashes, saying they waste water and pollute the water supply.

City Utility Department official Solomzi Mzamo said the carwashes are a “huge waste.”

“To make matters worse, the water runs all the time and the pipe is merely left on the ground,” Mzamo said in the iol.co.za story.

City officials say they plan to formalize a carwash at the Retreat Exchange, which is currently under fire for leaving water running into the street. City Utility Department officials are looking into possible solutions in the meantime including using rubber mattresses to soak up water and self closing nozzels for hose pipes.
