Jiffy Mart gets approval despite opposition

September 18, 2013
CHARLESTOWN, NH — Despite vocal opposition the City Planning Board voted 7-0 to approve a Jiffy Mart convenience store.

Residents said that increased traffic, the removal of a historic house and potential damage to the character of downtown would be detrimental to the community.

Boad Member Rosie Smith-Hull said the applicant, Champlain Oil, had “bent over backwards” to address concerns of the community.

“They’ve done everything we wanted, and we need a new Jiffy mart,” Smith-Hull said in the Valley News story.

Champlain Oil has agreed to dismantle the 200-year old house and move it to a resident’s property where it will be rebuilt. The company will also have to put up $15,000 in the form of a bond in case the Department of Transportation has to construct a left hand turning lane to manage an increase in traffic.

The approval comes with conditions and three waivers.
