Supermarket chain Big Y plans "express" store

September 24, 2013
LEE, MA — Grocery store chain Big Y is getting into the convenience store market with plans of opening a “Big Y Express” near one of their supermarkets.

Big Y Foods Inc. partnered with fellow Springfield-based F.L. Roberts  & Co. Inc. for the venture.

F.L. Roberts sold the land to Big Y after their plans to convert the Diesel Dan’s truck stop to a travel plaza fell through.

"Instead of selling out to a big conglomerate or chain, two local well-established companies are combining their expertise to help each grow to better serve our customers and communities," Big Y President Steve Roberts said in the Berkshire Eagle story.

According to Big Y brass is using the site as a “learning lab” in hopes of opening more sites.
