Professional Carwashing & Detailing

Advice from a successful detailer

The owner of Omni Detailing in Wintergreen, VA, shares how he stays in business during the slower winter months.

October 21, 2013

I stay booked two weeks in advance during the summer, but business always slows during the winter. I believe offering personal service is key to the success of my business. Here's how I communicate with my clients to help keep my shop busy year around:

  • I mail each new client a letter after completing their car. I recap the work I did, and recommend my “Express Detail” on a regular basis to protect the investment they've made in their car. I also include some extra business cards should they want to refer me to a friend, and thank them for their business.
  • I mail each old client two letters a year. One is a springtime, "get your car ready for summer" letter, and in the fall, I mail a "get your car ready for winter" letter (see sample below). I also include some useful information, such as car care tips, my price guide, etc., and then thank them for their business.
  • I mail each client a magnetic calendar in December.
  • I mail each client a postcard in January offering a “Mini Detail” at a special low price to help keep their car clean during the winter months.

The following is a sample of the letter I send out during the fall season.

Dear 'FirstName':

Every year when summer comes to an end and fall turns to winter, the song "California Dreamin'" starts playing in my head. You know, "all the leaves are brown, and the sky is gray." It must be because I'm ready for some cooler weather after all the record heat we had this summer!

Speaking of records, did you know that we're keeping our vehicles longer than ever before? According to a study by the Polk research firm, the average age of cars and trucks on U.S. roads hit a record 10.8 years last year, up from 8.4 years in 1995 when the study began. [1] Because our vehicles are getting older, it's more important than ever to have your vehicle serviced and detailed regularly to keep it running properly and looking its best. If you have an older vehicle that's showing its age, my Ultimate Detail is just what it needs to help regain its like new appearance.

I've had clients call me a magician and a miracle worker after they've seen my Ultimate Detail. It all starts with giving the vehicle a thorough cleaning inside and out from "bumper to bumper." This will take a full day on an older vehicle that tends to have more soil. Once the vehicle's been cleaned, it's dressed inside and out, the windows are cleaned, and any minor repairs are made. Then, blemishes, scuffs, scratches, and bonded contaminants are removed, and compound is applied to restore the paint finish. After that, paint chips and other defects are touched-up. Finally, wax is applied to seal and protect the paint finish, and a final wipe down and inspection is made.

Whether your vehicle is old or new, you can keep your vehicle looking new through regular maintenance and by adopting some of the tips I've included in my How To Keep Your Car Looking Like New list, which is attached. I offer my Basic Detail, Express Detail, and Ultimate Detail, to help you keep your vehicle looking its best regardless of its age and condition. I also offer reconditioning services for collector cars, or any older car that needs special attention. Please let me know if you have a project in mind, so I can schedule it during the winter months when I'm not so busy. Your car will be ready to enjoy in the spring!

Omni Detailing is dedicated to protecting the investment that you've made in your vehicle. Thank you for your valued business in the past, and I look forward to serving you this fall. Please call me if you have any questions, or if I may be of service to you. You just might fall in love with your vehicle all over again!

Sincerely,

John Barbour
