Blog: Goliath had no chance

This is one of the great human interest stories of all time.

Generally, this instructive tale is told from the perspective of David, the small shepherd boy.

How could such a modest figure defeat Goliath, whose physical strength and impressive presence seemed to assure a lopsided victory?

During a recent meeting with a dozen business owners, I shared with them a few insights on how David won this unbelievable mismatch. 

First, David understood his challenge completely. This was the ultimate “do or die” task.

Next, David prepared mentally for this battle.

Third, David ignored his critics.  Even his own family thought Goliath would prevail, but David’s personal commitment was greater than their grave doubts.

Fourth, David prepared physically for the confrontation. He carried to the battle ground, you will recall, five stones for his use, if his first one missed the mark.

Finally, David took decisive action.

This story doesn’t end here, however.

Next, I asked these owners a thought-provoking question: which one step was most responsible for David’s incredible victory?

Here the discussion took a surprising turn.

Most of the owners agreed with me, that David’s positive outcome could only have been achieved by his taking action.

Yet two others made a compelling case that David could not have defeated Goliath had he chosen to listen to his critics.

And a third person argued that had David’s personal mission not been clear in his own mind, the final result could have been totally different.

As a business owner, what can you take away from this legendary story?

To be sure, you don’t have to kill a giant, yet most successful operators prepare mentally and physically every day to take action, and to achieve their clearly-defined goals.
