The upscale snack market continues to grow, according to Ken Seiter, the Specialty Food Association, New York. The reason why, he said, is that people have more awareness and sophistication when it comes snack food, and desire a treat on a budget.

“Nuts obviously have been around forever, but [they are] becoming next year’s biggest snack food,” said Seiter. There are also many new flavors, like sriracha, habanero and sea salt that are challenging standbys like barbecue and sour cream and onion, the article notes.

Another thing that impresses customers, according to Seiter, is a local touch. “People want to know that they’re getting quality ingredients and where they came from.”
