The Army and Air Force Exchange Service at Minot Air Force Base, ND, celebrated the grand opening of their new $7.1 million gas station and carwash with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in December.
The Shoppette Class Six Gas & Car Care Center is now open 24 hours a day. It includes a coffee shop, deli, video rental, car care center, gas station and carwash.
The 13,200-square-foot shoppette took a year to complete and is located along the main road of the base.
Green Earth, a chain of environmentally-friendly carwashes, opened a detail center here in November. Green Earth Auto Detail held its grand opening on Dec. 6.
Like the other carwashes in Green Earth’s chain, the detail business uses a non-hazardous and water-based cleaning product and doesn’t use any water except for what’s needed when mixing the cleaning solution. The business promotes that it saves 160 gallons of water per wash.
Managing Director Mike Winkler said, “We look forward to serving Houston and beyond. We are planning on opening three more locations in Houston in 2009 and have plans to open additional markets throughout the Southwest and Southeast.”
Former real estate agent David Thompson now owns the recently opened Sunshine Hand Wash and Detail which doesn't use a single piece of machinery.
The business, which opened last October, charges $15 for a sedan and $20 to service a truck of SUV. All washes include interior cleanings as well.
Thompson said he opened the business to try and supplement his dwindling real estate earnings. So far, business has been slow, but he is optimistic and believes it will pick up.
Carroll Baird and sons, Kirk and Bill, recently announced the opening of their 160-foot-long express tunnel carwash at the site of a former Dairy Queen, which was demolished.
Kirk Baird said the carwash is the first of its kind in Waco. "It's good. More people are getting used to the concept. It's fairly common in larger cities."
Costs for a wash range from $3 to $10. The Bairds said they plan on opening three more washes.
Kingly Auto Sales, a detail shop and used car business, is now open. Owner Julius Oliver is currently attending Youngstown State University and previously attended a Detail King seminar in Pittsburgh. It was at the seminar where he learned about how to run a detail shop.
