Hats off

Two months ago, a coalition was formed in Georgia under the umbrella of the Southeastern Car Wash Association. The group’s mission? Keep the carwash industry afloat during Georgia’s drought crisis.

In three weeks, the association had a website up and running (www.gasaveswater.com), had arranged a meeting with the director of the state’s Environmental Protection Department, had started raising money, and had created a certification process for state carwashes.

The group’s success so far in Georgia shows the strength in numbers and in organization. Across the country, similar movements on a wide range of issues are being made by other associations to keep the carwash industry strong and growing.

From the association staff, to members and leaders, every person involved in these efforts deserves to be recognized and applauded for their dedication to the car care industry.

So, my hat is off, in no particular order, to:
  • The Connecticut Carwash Association for taking a stand against home washing with a billboard advertisement.
  • The Mid-Atlantic Carwash Association for scheduling a variety of events centered on hot topics in the industry — the most recent concerning express tunnels this November and the next scheduled for March to discuss RFID (radio frequency identification) technology.
  • The Midwest Carwash Association for taking the lead in fighting (and defeating) a carwash service tax in Michigan.
  • The New England Carwash Association for banding together to create a cable-ready TV advertisement for use by any of its members.
  • The Northeast Regional group for hosting a phenomenal trade show with near record-breaking attendance.
  • The Puget Sound Car Wash Association for concentrating on environmental education and charity events. PSCWA runs a website (www.charitycarwash.org) specifically for charity and community groups that want to host carwashes to raise money in the Puget Sound area.
  • The Southeastern Car Wash Association for hosting several social events that mixed carwashing business with pleasure. From the regional road shows to the Father/Son meeting, I know these are can’t-miss events for next year.
  • The Southwest Car Wash Association for holding an innovative “CEO Forum” at its 2007 show. The forum gave operators the chance to hear three CEOs discuss factors influencing the carwash industry today and where the industry will be going in the next five years.
  • The Western Carwash Association for its efforts in educating operators about SB 1468, the law extending the “Car Wash Registration Program” in California. The WCA has also made outstanding progress in charity and environmental education efforts.
And, of course, my compliments to the International Carwash Association for hosting its New Investor Seminar series at three regional trade shows this Fall. By partnering with regional associations, the ICA has stretched its reach even further and regional associations have been able to offer valuable investor education closer to home.
