• Tony Goff, president of Goff’s Enterprises Inc. of Pewaukee, WI, was named Man of the Year for the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Southeastern Wisconsin Chapter. Goff turned in a record $57,963 during the LLS’s Man & Woman of the Year Campaign, a 10-week fund-raising competition for research and support for families affected by blood cancers.
The main part of Goff’s campaign was a large-scale event at the Calatrava at the Milwaukee Art Museum in Milwaukee, WI. Goff performed a concert with the newly formed “52nd Street” Billy Joel Band, and there were also live and silent auctions and speeches.
“I want to thank all of you that contributed to the campaign in so many ways. From the personal and corporate donors to the volunteers and businesses that gave auction items as well as services that benefitted our ‘Night at the Calatrava’ event, there are literally hundreds of people that contributed to our campaign’s success!” Goff said in a press release.
• Crystal Care, a division of CC Detergents LLC based in East Rutherford, NJ, announced the addition of Devin Beucler as a sales and technical representative.
Beucler is in charge of sales and service to the carwash industry in the New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia areas. He has over 18 years experience working in the carwash and vehicle maintenance industries, and for the past eight years he has been a carwash owner and operator. He also has extensive knowledge concerning chemical dilution systems as well as how cleaning products can best be utilized in a facility.
• The International Carwash Association™ (ICA) has decided not to hold the 2013 Car Care World Expo™ in Chicago due to certain “work rules.” The Expo will instead be held in Las Vegas once again. It has been held there for the last five years, and the last time it was held in Chicago was in 2002. It has also been held in San Antonio and Orlando in the past 10 years.
Eric Wulf, CEO and executive director of the ICA, said in a Chicago Business story, “Chicago simply is not a possibility given its work rules.” Wulf also said the uncertainty concerning the state’s “wide-sweeping reforms” and the challenges being presented by several unions contributed to their decision to not pursue a venue in Chicago. “We had been in Las Vegas for five consecutive years, and our belief was that was where we were going to stay.”
Wulf said they had considered the McCormick Place in Chicago because it would allow for exhibitors to set up their own booths. A Las Vegas Review-Journal report stated that legislation enacted last year by the state of Illinois would have allowed exhibitors to do this, but unions have “tied up” the legislation and now there is a possibility that it would not be enforced by 2013. Wulf said in the aforementioned Chicago Tribune story, “Until the work rules are on par with Las Vegas, it’s a no-go for us.”
Chris Meyer, vice president of sales for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, stated that they look forward to continuing their longtime relationship with the Car Care World Expo and in helping them grow their show. “This reinforces that there is no better value for the experience than Las Vegas,” he stated.
• The International Detailing Association (IDA), based in St. Paul, MN, has launched its Certified Detailer Program.
The multi-phase program is designed to evaluate and develop a detailer’s technical knowledge and proficiency. The program has two phases. The first phase consists of 10 written exams, and it grants the detailer the title of IDA Certified Detailer. The second phase consists of advanced written exams and hands-on assessments, and it awards the title of IDA Master Detailer.
“The Certified Detailer Program is the first independent program of its kind,” IDA President Keith Duplessie stated. “It is a cooperative effort led by the industry’s leading manufacturers and professionals, and unlike many other programs, it is process specific not product specific.”
The program is available to both IDA members and nonmembers.
• Members of the New York State Car Wash Association (NYSCWA) gathered in Fishkill, NY, on May 25 to tour area carwashes and to discuss the industry’s newest innovations. About 70 members attended the day-long event which included a tour of five carwashes throughout the Hudson River valley. Afterwards, the attendees gathered for lunch. Following the tour, the group met up at the Ramada Inn here and discussed the industry’s newest innovations and attended a meeting led by NYSCWA President Mark Kubarek.
The NYSCWA’s next event was a trip to CitiField on June 17 to see the New York Mets lose to the Los Angeles Angels. A group of nearly 80 attendees filled three suites at Citi Field. “The event is really the brainchild of Mike Benmosche, our treasurer, and Stuart Rosenberg of Beverly Hills Hand Car Wash,” Suzanne Stansbury, NYSCWA executive director, stated in a press release. “We thank them so much for their hard work in making this family event such a success and something that our attendees look forward to annually.”
Event sponsors included Micrologic Associates, Simoniz USA, Mang Insurance and Northeast Carwasher magazine. The Association’s next outing is on October 19 in Albany, NY, and will feature a carwash tour and presentation by Grace For Vets Founder Mike Mountz of Cloister Car Wash.
• The Car Wash Operators of New Jersey (CWONJ) recently raised $5,000 through its 11th Annual Golf Outing and has now raised $32,555 for the Children’s Specialized Hospital.
The golf outing took place at the Suburban Country Club on June 13, and included 18 holes of golf, a buffet lunch and dinner and a raffle which procured the donations. The winning golf team included Scott Freund, Barry Hart, Chris Hart and Pete DeFazio who scored a 58.
The Children’s Specialized Hospital works with children who have been affected by brain and spinal cord injuries, autism and life-changing illnesses. CWONJ has been raising money for the facility, which treats more than 16,000 children per year, for the last seven years.
Winning golfer Freund noted in a press release, “We had a picturesque day. You could not have asked for better weather and our donation to the hospital really makes the day poignant.”
