BATON ROUGE, LA — Steadily rising gasoline prices are starting to take a toll on drivers and carwash businesses.
A poll conducted for the Associated Press and America Online News found that 64 percent of those surveyed say gas prices will cause financial problems for them in the next six months.
Justin Alford, co-owner of the Benny's Car Wash & Oil Change/B-Quik Convenience stores across Baton Rouge said that although gasoline sales have not changed, business at his four carwashes are down as much as 5 percent to 10 percent per location.

NORWICH, CT — Motorists being affected by higher fuel prices are filling up less frequently, and multi-profit center businesses are looking to the wash to make up the difference.
Raymond Thapar, manager of a local Shell Station, said his business has been poor for about a month. He has been losing about $3,000 a week and making only a nickel-per-gallon off the sale of regular gasoline.
Thapar said the carwash he operates is keeping his business going. He recently lowered the $2 wash to only $1 to keep the customers coming back.
