Poll: Will a carwash college help the industry?
In late February Professional Car Care Online™ reported on a partnership between Sonny’s Enterprises and Steve Gaudreau to create CarWash College™.
The purpose of the college will be to provide information, education and training to the carwash industry.
Gaudreau, a 20-year veteran carwash industry consultant and trainer, has developed the curriculum and is serving as the first president.
Gaudreau, who previously operated POWER Inc.’s CarWash Institute®, had the task of creating an independent organization that will serve new and existing carwash operators, as well as provide support for customers of Sonny’s Enterprises.
Paul Fazio, president of Sonny’s, told Professional Car Care Online™ he sought out Gaudreau for the project because of his longtime expertise.
The college courses are not restricted to only Sonny’s customers.
“The CarWash College™ is open to anyone coming into the industry, or that’s in the industry,” Fazio stated.
The college was formally introduced at the International Carwash Association’s 2006 Car Care World Expo.
Professional Carwashing & Detailing® magazine conducted an unscientific straw poll asking respondents if they thought a carwash college would benefit the industry.
According to the poll results, the majority of respondents feel that a carwash college would not be a benefit.
Of the 270 people who responded, approximately 57 percent answered “No,” a carwash college would not benefit the industry and about 42 percent answered “Yes,” it would benefit the wash industry.
Real wash owners weigh in
- “I responded in favor of a carwash college. I guess that puts us in a minority.
I think the reason that so many voted ‘No’ was the problem of keeping it non-partisan so to speak. I mean after all, there are several competing methods of tunnel vehicle washing and 10 times as many equipment manufacturers.
Who is going to present the information? Will it be a balanced presentation or a sales tool for the companies that support it? How much is going to be charged and where will it be held?
For example, a flex-serve in the Midwest is going to face many different challenges that carwashes in the Southeast do not.
Those are just a few of my concerns. However, the idea of being able to prepare new wash owners with practical experience before opening their facility would be an invaluable learning experience and I believe dramatically enhance their chances of success.” — Bill
