If you read newspapers, watch TV, listen to the radio, talk to your neighbor or make friendly conversation with your doctor, then you’re bound to know: The U.S. economy is in a bad place right now and no one in their right mind is going to invest in a business, build a new business, hire for their business or pitch to the bank for financing a new business.
But despite all of those gray, gloomy reports about the U.S.
economy, our situation today does have a silver lining. If you quiet the buzz from the naysayers long enough, you might have time to read some more optimistic reports. Reports like the Jan. 15 story from Reuters which cited two top Federal Reserve officials who predicted a recovery
for the economy starting in the second half of 2009 “if financial markets and the housing sector gain a foothold.”
Indeed, the only way out of a recession is for the country’s economy to show growth, and part of that is a healthy return to the start of new entrepreneurial efforts.
The optimistic argument says a recession is a practical time to start a new business; when you can stretch your investment dollars with good deals on land, construction and other start-up costs. According to the even more optimistic lot, it’s not only a practical time to start a new business -- it might also present the perfect opportunity to open your first carwash. “Starting a new business during a recession is like vacationing in the off season,” according to an American entrepreneur quoted in The Independent.
"It's a little less crowded, and everything starts going on sale."
So if you’re willing to put up with below-average temperatures at the beach and perhaps the threat of a monsoon (just kidding, probably more likely to be a few days of rain and heavy mosquito coverage), then starting a new carwash today could be a golden opportunity for the ambitious, well-researched and well-prepared operator.
