Something worth celebrating

I’ve always felt bad for August. Aside from my birthday (which I’ve recently been told is not, in fact, a national holiday), there’s not much going on the calendar for these 31 days. Every other month I can find a reason to eat, drink and be merry, but August only brings those dogs days of summer and the Back to School specials at Wal-Mart.

As a business owner you know you’re only as exciting as your next promotion, and I’m of the same school of thought. So every year when August rolls around I search for a reason to bust out the champagne and take in enough calories to last the month. This year, I have three happy happenings:

  • WashIdeas.com has celebrated its 50th podcast episode – and I got to be a guest;
  • CarwashTV.com, a video magazine for the industry, is live and already has over 12 segments posted online; and
  • Simoniz has a most excellent ad, titled “Gateway to Heaven,” which sings the praises of the professional carwash industry in Motor Trend magazine.

We’re going to overlook some of the minor details, like the fact that all of the above actually happened in June or July, and instead focus on the positive energy all of this brings to our industry. For starters, how about the fact that guys like Ryan Carlson of WashCard Systems and WashIdeas.com and Kyle Doyle of Blue Sky Marketing and carwashTV.com are out there scouring the country for good ideas and sharing them with carwashers everywhere via the Internet. Not only that, but these pioneers are drawing larger audiences with each and every episode.

As if all that weren’t enough, Simoniz also brightened my month by creating a spot to combat a May 2009 advertisement in Motor Trend which disparaged automatic carwashes. (I’m going to save myself the heartburn and avoid revisiting that disgusting mess; instead try searching www.carwash.com for “Mothers Polish” if you missed out on the controversy.)

The Simoniz ad reached over 1 million regular subscribers and 90,000 newsstand buyers. I’m including the entire copy of the ad below, although you might want to pick up the July issue of Motor Trend so you can stick the page on your wall and kick back with a beer and some cake to celebrate.

“Professional carwashes rock! They are great for your car’s finish and even better for the environment. They use modern computer controlled equipment, recycle their water, and use biodegradeable detergents and polishes. The next time your car needs cleaning and you don’t have time to do it yourself…trust it to your nearest car wash professional!”

Amen, Simoniz. As I say too often for someone who’s paid to write, “Couldn’t have said it better myself.”
