Writing in favor of the new dollar coin
The introduction of the Sacagawea (gold) dollar coin in 2000 provided the self-serve carwash industry with a much-needed higher denomination coin. The gold dollar coin eliminated the poor design of the silver Susan B. Anthony coin that was easily confused with a quarter.
Today's dollar has the purchasing power of a quarter in the 1960s. The dollar coin allows consumers to buy more with fewer coins.

In 1979, the United States Mint issued the first circulating coin to feature an actual woman, the Anthony dollar. The now infamous coin was issued from 1979 to 1981, and then again in 1999.
The coin has been plagued with problems — most surrounding the fact that it closely resembles the quarter and the public refuses to acknowledge it as a viable alternative to the dollar bill. During its first round at circulation, it failed miserably.
