They’re back! The lovebugs have landed in Florida

SANFORD, FL — The invasive lovebugs, which fly in droves throughout Central Florida and up the Southeast coast this time of year, are back, which is good news for carwash owners, WESH reported.

The April 25 story quoted motorist Missiouri McPhee who said, “Nasty is also an understatement for what they are. And the windshield wiper? You just smear the guts all over the place. That’s useless, too. …It’s like they merged on the car.”

Love bugs, which mate mid air and appear as double-headed maggots, are so filled with acid that they can damage a car’s finish.

Car care expert Chase Tillis advised drivers to wash their cars at least once a week. He said you have about 48 hours to remove the bugs before permanent damage is done to the car.

According to a Pasco County Headlines Examiner story, lovebugs are drawn to compounds found in gasoline and diesel engines, causing them to land on vehicles.
