In early October, Iowa-based Ryko, Mfg. announced that Scott Clawson, former president of Gilbarco Veeder-Root, a maker of petroleum industry products, would take on the role of Ryko’s new CEO.
Professional Carwashing & Detailing decided to touch base with Clawson to see how he’s adjusting to his new job, and find out what is in store for Ryko’s future.
Professional Carwashing & Detailing: How are you adjusting to your new position?
Scott Clawson: It’s been a very smooth transition; overall things are excellent. It has not been difficult due to my industry experience, contacts and understanding, for the most part, of the business Ryko is in.
Because of Ryko’s position and team in place, I’ve had an excellent organization to rely on as I learn the carwash side of things versus the retail petroleum industry.
PC&D: Are you enjoying your new job?
SC: I love it. I’ve never had so much fun.
PC&D: A previous company press release mentioned that you plan on doubling the size of Ryko — how?
SC: We plan to do that through becoming the premier marketing and supplier of carwash equipment and services in the country.
It begins with having an excellent strategy in place and focusing on the customer, where you listen and implement things to more than satisfy their needs. We’re going to have a very disciplined business system in place that helps do that.
There are lots of areas where we can grow — in other pro-duct lines, where Ryko is a very small player, such as chemicals, self-serve, and the investor non-gas market.
We will concentrate on organic growth opportunities that will push us outside of our core business, and how people view us.PC&D: Any changes for Ryko?
SC: Nothing huge at the moment. We are very excited about our development going on in the investor market in terms of web access, remote management and vertical integration. We’re also going to implement lean manufacturing and we’re building our marketing organization.
