This month, Professional Carwashing & Detailing magazine speaks with John Wilkinson of Monkey Shine Car Wash to learn more about the new carwash franchise associated with Grease Monkey, the successful quick lube & preventive maintenance franchise.

Professional Carwashing & Detailing: How did the Monkey Shine carwash franchise begin?
Jeff Wilkinson: For years, Grease Monkey International, Inc. [franchisor of quick lube & preventive maintenance facilities] had been assisting its franchisees in establishing carwashes on their sites because many were large enough to house another profit center. Grease Monkey franchisees needed the support they were accustomed to with Grease Monkey in establishing their car wash business. Grease Monkey recognized that need and saw it as a great opportunity to provide a winning solution to operators seeking a multi-profit solution.

PC&D: Tell me about the relationship between Monkey Shine Car Wash and Grease Monkey?
JW: Monkey Shine Franchising, LLC (Monkey Shine) is a separate company, but many of the owners and key employees of Monkey Shine are the same as those of Grease Monkey International, Inc. We wanted the concept and identities to be separate so that franchisees can invest in one or both business models, which can be marketed as distinct businesses.

PC&D: How many operating locations exist today? How many operations are anticipated by 2008?
JW: Three carwash facilities are open in Colorado and an additional 30 locations are planned or in development by the end of 2008 as far east as North Carolina and as far west as California.

PC&D: Can you tell us more about the carwash format?
JW: There will be three basic carwash formats: IBA (in-bay automatic, single or double bay), self-serve, and the express tunnel. Tunnel length will typically run in the 100’ configuration length.

Smaller or larger configurations will be available depending on the franchisee’s needs. We will package those together based on the desires of the customer and determination of what the market will support.

We have a preferred vendor/supplier relationship with two primary equipment companies: Jim Coleman Company and PDQ. Our preferred chemical supplier is CSI/Lustra, which will be co-branded with Monkey Shine.

PC&D: Can you describe the set-up of the carwashes?
JW: All IBA’s will be coin-operated as well as credit card compatible. On the express-side, we will feature gated systems and customer service specialists that will greet customers.

PC&D: What opportunities will be available to franchisees?
JW: All franchisees will be fully supported in marketing with a library of marketing material templates available for customization to each location and market. With future market growth, additional materials will become available and our library of offerings will grow. Along with marketing support, Monkey Shine will provide ongoing training in all phases of operations as well as direct field support with site visits.

PC&D: Can you describe your wash packages?
JW: Our three primary packages are Monkey Shine Ultimate Car Wash, Monkey Shine Super Wash and Monkey Shine Basic. The pricing structure will be market driven and be based on the equipment available at each site.

PC&D: Will any detailing services be offered?
JW: At this time, no detailing services are offered.

PC&D: Why would a potential carwash owner/operator want to be involved with your company?
JW: Traditionally, carwash operators received their training, guidance and support from an equipment manufacturer, geared to meet the manufacturer or chemical supplier’s wants and needs. We come from a different perspective, offering support based on the franchisee’s needs. We’re truly the only “full service” franchise in the carwash industry.
