HAMPSHIRE COUNTY, ENGLAND — Charity carwashes held by fire stations throughout the county have been canceled due to a possible water shortage, The News reported.
The March 13 story stated that the events normally raise thousands of pounds for the Fire Fighters Charity, but the group had to cancel all events because of a likely hosepipe ban.
The charity uses the money to support firefighters and their families, and one fire station had planned a wash to benefit a children’s hospice as well.
Pauline Tyldesley, regional fundraiser, said in the story: “The national carwash provides a vital source of income for our charity, as well as being a fun event with a serious safety message. But we totally understand the position of the water authorities given the possibility of a drought.”
Since the carwashes have been canceled, the group is appealing to supermarkets to allow firefighters to have collections at their premises and to let them assist with bag packing.
