5 Tips on starting a Twitter account

Step 1. Create an account: Go to Twitter.com and sign up. Your Full name will be the name of your business, or a shortened version of it. Make sure the Email address you provide for your account is one that you routinely check, because this is a way Twitter provides you with updates on activity. As always, have a Password that has letters, numbers and other characters, to prevent your account from being hacked.

The next step will be to come up with a username. This will be the name displayed when people search for you, or look at your account. Keep it simple. Use the name of your wash, or a shortened version of it.

Step 2. Improve your Pictures: Having a Twitter account won’t do you any good, unless you present yourself properly.

Go to the Wheel icon at the top right corner of the screen and click it, and then click edit profile. You’re going to want to provide some basic information here. It’s important to change your Photo and your Header to images that represent your business well, because these images are going to be the face of your profile. Check out @DetailXPerts for an example of how to show off images that will work for your business.

Step 3. Update your information: Under Location, put the city and state you’re in. If you have a website, and you should, put that in the Website box. It’s also important to fill in the box labeled Bio. This is your chance to explain in 160 characters what your wash is all about. Here's our bio for an example: "Magazine and online newsource for the carwashing & detailing industry. Visit the site and subscribe to our eNews."

Step 4. Connect with relevant groups: Twitter is all about being social, and you’ll want to connect with carwashes, trade publications, friends and family, business partners, etc. For starters, you can connect with @carwashorg (ICA) and @carwashmag (PC&D). You'll find more Twitter accounts to follow by going to the top of the website, and using the Search box. When you’ve found an account you think you want to follow, click on it, and it’ll take your to their homepage, where there is a small Follow button. Click that to follow the user, and click it again if you want to unfollow the user.

Step 5. Send a Tweet: In the upper right corner of the site, there is a Blue Button, when you click it, you can compose a tweet. You have 140 characters to work with, so you want to make sure to get your message across concisely. Tweets you send will go out to all of your followers. As an example, if you’re running a special promotion, you could tweet: “$5 off of all wash types today!”

In my next blog we will explore some of the complexities of Twitter, explain what a hashtag is and some of the ways you can go about cultivating a following. But for now, just get acclimated with this new tool that will improve visibility for your business.
