5 Tips on the different ways to use Twitter
There are multiple “right ways” to use Twitter, so find the ones that works for you. In order to help you along the way, here are some tips.
Tip 1. Follow the news from your Home screen: This is one of the easiest things you can do, and is a great way to find out what’s going on in any industry, whether it is carwashing, detailing or sports. The key to doing this is following the Twitter accounts that report the news. Find out which accounts tweet about the industry, and then follow them, it’s as simple as that. You can start with trade groups, other carwashes in the area and yes, even the trade publications that you read (@CarwashMagazine). Sometimes it’s more difficult than it should be to find the account you’re looking for on Twitter, in that case you can just go to the company website, where it’s usually easy to find Twitter information. When you go on Twitter, your home screen will automatically update the most recent tweets, and you’ll be able to find out everything that’s going on.

Tip 2. Follow the news through hashtags: This one is a little more complicated, but it’s still pretty simple. The difference between searching a hashtag and reading the tweets on your home screen is that when you search hashtags you’ll get all the tweets using that hashtag, and on your home screen you will only get tweets from accounts you follow. There’s good and bad about both. If you’re only looking to read tweets from the accounts you follow, use the home screen; if you’re interested in hearing what everyone is saying about something, search the hashtag. You’ll have to explore both options, and decide what you like more. From experience, I’ve found both to be effective, and each being better in specific situations.

Tip 3. Use Twitter to have two-way communication: One great thing about Twitter being so restrictive in characters is how fast responses are. You’ll find it easy to tweet back and forth quickly because the platform allows for it. When you gain a new follower, send them a tweet saying thanks, and ask what they like about your wash; or, if you want to hear constructive criticism, ask them what you could do to improve their experience. When you receive a tweet, make sure to respond back; just like in real life, communication goes both ways. Remember that Twitter doesn’t always have to be about marketing and advertising your business, it can be a way to connect with your customers, and find out in a 140 character response about how they feel about your business.
Tip 4. Promoting your business on Twitter: The reality is the more followers you have, the more accounts you can reach. Since you’re just starting out, you won’t have a big audience, but you can still promote your business to the followers you do have. You won’t usually need to worry about using the #carwash on most of your tweets, since you’re only looking to connect with the audience who would go to your wash, and not everyone on Twitter who is tweeting about carwashes. If there’s been a recent period of snow, and you know people are going to want to wash their cars, you can tweet something like: The sun’s out, and you know it’s time to get all that gunk off of your car, so stop by! I’ll write more about promoting your business on Twitter in the future, but keep it snappy and simple, and write in a way that people can understand and won’t tune out.

Tip 5. Use Twitter for a promotions: Social media can be a fun way to run a promotion without having to commit to an advertising budget. For example, you could hand out flyers at your wash saying there is a weeklong contest using the hashtag #Joescarwash, and that the follower that has the best tweet about why they love your carwash wins a free luxury wash. This is just one example, but have fun with it, and get your customers to enjoy connecting with you on Twitter.
In my next blog I’ll be explaining how you can go about cultivating a following on Twitter. Here are some carwashes that are great examples of how to use the platform that can help you learn.
