5 Tips once you’ve started a Twitter account

Welcome to my second column in a series on learning the social media website. We're going to be focusing on hashtags in this edition.

Tip 1. Understand what a hashtag does: These little symbols (#) are not nearly as complicated as you might think. In the world of Twitter, when you put the hashtag symbol before a word, it basically marks your entire tweet as searchable by that word. For example, if you’re tweeting about the Super Bowl, you would put #SB somewhere in your tweet so everyone who searches #SB can see what you wrote. During the game, for example, you may have wanted to tweet something like this: “I’ve never wanted to be Peyton Manning less than I do now #SB”.

Tip 2. Understand how to search a hashtag: It’s really as simple as going to the Search box on Twitter, putting the symbol (#) before the word, and searching it just like you would on Google. For example type in #carwash (it’s important not to use a space in between words). By default, you will search Top tweets. Below the Search box, there is an option to change to All tweets. From this screen, you can view all of the tweets that have been made using #carwash. Explore this in some depth, as Twitter is a great way to keep up to date on what’s happening in the world (and the world of carwashes). The first place news is reported is often on Twitter, and it's a great website to keep you informed.

Tip 3. Know what hashtags to search: Now that you know how to search a hashtag, you’ll want to know which hashtags to search. Well, that all depends on what business you’re in. In the carwashing and detailing business the most popular hashtags are pretty straightforward: #carwash and #detailing. Make sure to search these hashtags to find out what other wash owners are doing on Twitter to cultivate a following. Wash customers also frequently tweet under these hashtags, and it’s a great chance to be a fly on the wall as people tell you what they think about the carwash industry.

Tip 4. Send a tweet using a hashtag: This is how you get heard on Twitter. Do you have a great deal on luxury washes today, then tweet about it. Keep it short and snappy, you only have 140 characters: $5 off luxury wash all this week #carwash. It is usually best to save the hashtags for the end of the tweet, because this way the text looks cleaner and is easier to understand.

Tip 5. Start following Twitter accounts: I’ll go more in-depth on this next time, but the best way to learn how to use Twitter is to follow others, and to learn from them. When you’re searching hashtags, and see a tweet you like, click on the account that sent it, and once the profile comes up, click the Follow button. Once you follow an account, you will get all of its tweets sent directly to you on your homepage, which is in the top left corner of the screen.
