Happy Memorial Day
I'm honestly not sure if it's appropriate to wish a "happy" Memorial Day to people. I'm not sure of the etiquette, but it might be a little questionable to wish a "happy" day in honor of people who served and lost their lives defending our country. Now, I'm not against family get-togethers and barbecues. In fact, I love them. But, I also know that there's a lot more to this holiday weekend than briquettes and burgers.
This holiday means so much to me. My grandparents (on my mom's side) served during World War II on the USS Miguel. It was a hospital ship and my grandfather was a doctor on the ship and my grandmother was a nurse. They both met and fell in love while serving. I also had distant family members (related to the same grandfather) die during the war for their Jewish faith. I am forever grateful to the Greatest Generation for all they did and will forever respect those men and women and all men and women who serve or have served.
One of the things I admire most about the carwashing and detailing industry is the generous spirit of the owners and operators. I am constantly comforted in hearing stories of how a business has given back, donated funds, or honored others. I know Memorial Day must mean a lot to you, too. You're the types who give free services to veterans and don't bat an eye. It's truly a great industry.
Just yesterday, I was moved by the story of Auto Spa Car Wash owner David Woods of York and Kittery, ME, who decided to donate all of this holiday weekend's profits to his employee who needs to buy a wheelchair van for his son. The Dakota's Ride Benefit Car Wash will be held from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on May 26, 27 and 28. Woods thinks they have the potential to raise as much as $36,000. Woods is an example of the ultimate American, and someone who is truly memorable.
As a side note, please know that our offices here at PC&D will be closed on Monday. I wish you all a safe weekend.
