Never have I been less interested in a World Series.

Not since Mays, McCovey and Cepeda terrorized pitchers in San Francisco’s old Candlestick Park have I even followed a professional sports team west of the Mississippi.

Yet, during the jubilant post game celebration, after the Giants swept the favored Tigers, a jarring statement grabbed my complete attention.

“We did our jobs,” a skilled but uncelebrated role player on the Championship World Series team stated, almost matter-of-factly.

His point: It doesn’t take a team of superstars to win a World Series. The players knew their assignments, and they completed them. No mystery there. The Giants were internally motivated, properly coached and played well together as a championship team. 

It should be noted, of course, that major league managers have a full array of skilled assistants. For instance, there are always pitching and hitting coaches on any MLB roster.

Carwash operators should be so fully staffed. In our industry, in fact, one vitally important role and crucial position is all too often left to chance, or totally forgotten.

To be sure, when a carwash is in need of repair, operators know which company can give them speedy, professional service to get their equipment up and running again.

Most operators also know who to call when they have a wash quality or “soaping” problem. The carwash industry is very blessed with many quality chemical suppliers.

Who does an operator turn to, however, when his revenues plummet? Who provides the ideas, the marketing expertise and the needed follow-up to pull any wash out of a downward and depressing sales spiral?

Here a desperate operator searches in vain for a reliable “go to” partner.

Looking toward a brighter and more prosperous future, the industry at every level surely will enjoy greater financial success when, at the end of any business day, an expertly trained and highly motivated team player will simply say “I did my job,” when asked about his necessary marketing plans and his crucial contributions.

These new hires will be specifically tasked to increase wash counts and revenues at thousands of washes. They will also become known as the industry’s next game-changers.
