Blog: Upsets, mindsets and positive outcomes

The Hoosiers are out of the tournament, upset by a swarming Syracuse team.

In truth, I thought Indiana was over-rated much of the year.

Besides, their story is not nearly as compelling as the four remaining teams.

Wichita State is the Cinderella team, of course. Michigan won because of a miracle finish.  The Syracuse team executes a precision (and stifling) zone defense flawlessly.

But the team which impressed me the most, of course, was Louisville.

The powerful mindset displayed by the Louisville players and coaches after the horrific and shocking injury to one of its players was impressive.

But this breath-taking episode also reminded me of an important and underutilized, counterintuitive concept which states that sudden setbacks often create their own amazing breakthroughs!!

Louisville may have beaten Duke anyway, who knows? But once the Cardinals absorbed the gut-wrenching loss of a teammate, and made the necessary adjustments, they became unstoppable.

In sports and in business, positive outcomes are always expected, but they can never be guaranteed.  Stuff happens, and these upsets occur at the most inconvenient time.

Yet those athletes and business owners who stay most focused on achieving their goals can overcome incredible obstacles and setbacks. In ways that can not be specifically measured, but must be fully appreciated, a “can-do” mindset becomes an invaluable asset.

I also give high marks to Louisville’s unflappable coach, Rick Pitino. When his world was certainly topsy-turvy, and spinning out of control, he did not attempt to ‘over coach’ his players; he let them perform as he knew they could and would.

When you are next caught off-guard, stay focused and maintain a positive mindset. The most upsetting event at your car wash can also produce a surprising and unique opportunity to reach a higher level of achievement for you and your team.

Unexpected positive outcomes will never appear in your business or marketing plans, yet they will become a large part of your continued success nevertheless.
