Goal-setting and multi-tasking

Are these two popular, performance-enhancing skills mutually exclusive, or are they compatible?

Do you agree with me? I believe it foolhardy, as a serious carwash operator, to try to excel or exploit both of these skills.

For best results, become known as a serious and habitual goal-setter. 

For many mature high-achievers, goal-setting is part of their operational DNA.

It is in mine, for sure. I have been a fan and student of Brian Tracy since the early 1980s, when I still lived in Toronto. 

But for younger top-performers, who have grown up quickly, perhaps in a faster-paced business environment, multi-tasking has become a way of life.

One of my closest clients recently told me, only half-jokingly, that multi-tasking was a learned survival skill.

To be sure, both activities have their place in a fast-paced culture. 

But I am inclined to agree with John Eliot, an industrial psychologist and performance coach, who asserts “multi-tasking is merely doing a bunch of things half-heartedly all at once.”

If you strive to increase your carwash revenues this quarter, if this is a top priority,  please be certain to put in writing your revenue and operational goals. 

For best results, your goals also must be very specific, easily measurable, and quite achievable for competent and properly-trained team members.

The most successful team goals are ones which are publicly-stated and are clearly time-sensitive. 

Finally, do yourself this favor: Leave multi-tasking to the mediocre operators.      

Going into the last few weeks of the year, astute operators must make aggressive plans to finish 2012 on a very positive note.
