Almost everyone in the detail and carwash industry knows what needs to happen. The greater challenge is to know how to do it.

Specifically, how is the best way for detailers and carwash operators to build a larger customer base?

Making this thorny task even more difficult today is a now fully-understood fact: consumer shopping habits and patterns have changed dramatically in the past few years.

“We even see different shopping patterns which are specific to each generation,” Jay Siff, CEO of Moving Targets told me in a fascinating interview earlier this week.

The fast-paced change in new technologies, including Social Media, makes it very difficult for business owners to connect successfully and consistently with their customers.

I am not an expert in Social Media, so I asked Jay his thoughts on Facebook, Twitter and other new tools for businesses like carwashes.

“Social Media is a real wild card,” he admits. “Yet we know consumers are using smart phones and web-based tools regularly to make buying decisions on many every-day purchases, so it behooves carwash operators to know more about Social Media, and how it can help these owners gain more customers.”

Twenty years ago, investors, developers and owners worked diligently to locate the best possible retail site to give their washes the greatest exposure and the best chance for financial success.

In 2013, however, consider this possible scenario: since you are not technical or internet-savvy, many potential customers may be driving past your wash to get to another one, whose owner has discovered a more effective way to communicate with and capture his customers, and, OMG, maybe even yours!!

To learn more about the many uses of Social Media to build a larger customer base, I urge operators and readers to sign up today for this Complimentary Social Media Webinar: “Social Media Basics. You Got Started….Now What?” hosted by Moving Targets next Tuesday, at 2 pm EST.
