We all know this to be true.
A McKinsey and Company statement in August, “Breaking the US Growth Impasse,” was ominous, yet totally predictable.
“As the weak economy drags on, a hard reality has become clear: the US growth engine isn’t what it was in decades past.”
Where and when do operators (and suppliers too) seek and discover needed relief?
The authors of the McKinsey and Company paper offered four helpful suggestions to aid businesses that wish to grow and prosper during these challenging times.
I have encouraged operators to pursue three of these measures:
- Develop new, achievable standards
- Invest in new partnerships
- Step out of your comfort zone
Operators who embrace change, and who think (and then act) smartly in new and improved ways, will be the emerging leaders as the car wash industry continues to recover.
In a short and insightful book, “Who Moved My Cheese?” Dr. Spencer Johnson, a masterful story-teller, shares his expertise on how individuals can seek new goals, and achieve even greater success by expanding their comfort zones.
To begin this journey, however, operators must change their mindsets first.
“When you change what you believe, you change what you do,” Johnson says.
The subtitle of Johnson’s book captures the true essence of his book: “An Amazing Way To Deal With Change In Your Work and In Your Life.”
For carwash operators, critical changes for your business might include how you train your greeters and attendants, how you interact with your most important suppliers, or how you identify, attract, delight, and then follow up with every customer at your wash.
Better yet, delegate each of these tasks to your most experienced or skilled team members. Let them share in the many daily tasks of building a durable business.
